About Man Of The Year
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man & Woman of the Year is a unique national campaign that focuses on raising funds for the fight against blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Hundreds of men and women in 61 chapters across America vie for the title each year in a 10-week fundraising competition.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man & Woman of the Year campaign began in 1990 in San Francisco to honor John Spencer, a valued employee at Hastings Clothier in San Francisco and a Society volunteer. Spencer died of leukemia at the age of 39. It was in John's memory that Hastings began supporting the Society's Northern California Chapter with the San Francisco Man & Woman of the Year event. Now, more than 40 Man & Woman of the Year campaigns occur across the nation, making this a highly visible fundraising program.
Candidates compete for the most votes in male and female categories; one vote equals $1. The man and woman who raise the most funds in their local LLS Chapter competition such as New York City are named the Man & Woman of the Year. These winners from each chapter then compete against their peers across the nation with the man and woman who raise the most money named the National Man & Woman of the Year.
The 2017 NYC Man & Woman of the Year competition takes place from March 23rd, 2017 through June 1st, 2017.
